The Mount Gambier Aquatic Centre project was a concept design to redevelop the centre. The decision to do a comprehensive upgrade was to provide world-class aquatic leisure facilities for the South Australian region.
The area is known for quarrying of limestone and has a rich heritage in providing limestone products throughout Australia. To pick up on this heritage, the architectural design team developed a sweeping facade, clad in limestone blocks. The building accommodates not only the area’s aquatic facilities, but also its youth services, indoor volleyball, badminton and basketball courts. It also has outdoor beach volleyball facilities.
