Sunbury Aquatic and Leisure Centre project

Type:  Sports and Leisure
Budget:  R30M
Location:  Sunbury, Victoria, Australia
*undertaken as Project Architect for CO-OP Studio – Australia

This project, which formed a key component of delivering high quality therapeutic and sports recovery programmes to a local community, involved the addition of a new warm water pool, as well as sit and stand spa areas to an aquatic facility. Our focus was to create easy-to-access, associated support amenities for rehabilitation and recovery programmes involving an increasing ageing demographic to improve their mobility and general well-being.

The design of this new addition to the existing facility integrated the new warm water pool with the current building’s form, scale and materiality. The result was that the upgrade now stands out as an innovative feature of the bigger aquatic and leisure centre. This was achieved using a perforated anodised aluminium screen with a wave-like pattern to allow controlled light into the new facility, and to provide privacy to the users of the warm water pool at the same time.
